Transforming Heating in a Century-Old Home

This case study chronicles a remarkable boiler replacement project in a century-old property. The homeowners sought help as their ageing boiler, a relic from two decades ago, had been showing clear signs of deterioration.

This ageing unit struggled to provide hot water and wasn’t adequately warming the house. On top of these fundamental issues, it was also emitting concerning mechanical noises.

The Challenge

The challenge was two-fold. Firstly, the homeowners had to contend with an outdated Ideal Mini boiler, roughly two decades old, that had lost its efficiency over time. Its limitations resulted in both heat loss and higher energy bills.

Secondly, the homeowners wanted to relocate the boiler from the kitchen to the utility room, a task they believed to be hindered by the property’s thick stone walls.

Our First Impressions

Upon inspection, our engineer, Robbie, identified the age and inefficiency of the existing boiler. He presented a range of replacement options, offering valuable guidance in selecting the ideal unit. The homeowners’ desire to move the boiler to the utility room was met with assurance that it was feasible, although some reworking would be required.

The Solution

Two skilled engineers, Andy and Jack, embarked on the project. Their primary challenge was re-routing pipework through a brick wall from the kitchen to the utility room. Their expertise ensured minimal cutting of units, liberating valuable work surface space and preserving the use of the cupboard below, addressing the recurrent issue of external waste pipes from the washing machine, rerouting them neatly and replacing them.

The engineers also encountered a severely corroded old flue that was one of the worst the engineers had seen. Corroded flues are extremely dangerous as they can leak carbon monoxide. It can be easy to forget that a new boiler isn’t just about improving energy efficiency; it can also be vital for your family’s safety.

The New Boiler

Within two days, the homeowners had a Worcester Bosch Greenstar 28 CDi compact boiler with a 10-year guarantee, perfectly fitted in the utility room.

It looked great and operated silently, efficiently heating the house, even in Eco mode. The homeowners now enjoy instant hot water with excellent pressure.

The engineers were fantastic and worked so hard; the quality of their workmanship could not be faulted, plus they left everything clean and tidy, even going as far as mopping the floors before leaving.
